Hi Buddies,
I’m back from a couple of short tours, recovered from a weird neck injury, and excited about Fall. It’s a bit action packed, but I’m still hoping to find some time to enjoy the special sparkle that seems to come with seasons changing. And of course, pie:
Various professional tidbits:
Our new Honestly Same album, Hot Plate Only*, is out now on Moonglyph Records. Honestly Same is Zach Moore (bass, synths), Zachary Good (clarinets), Mabel Kwan (piano, accordion), Sam Scranton (percussion, electronics), and me. We had a lot of fun recording live and then cutting things into loops and then recording over those loops. It’s a real lasagna of an album. Or maybe a twice-baked potato? Anyway, I’m really proud of it and happy to be working with these wonderful musicians. Give it a listen!
Katinka Kleijn and I have a piece going up at the Chicago Design Museum (a little space across from the cultural center on Randolph). It’s some videos and performance ephemera from our trip to Joshua Tree last year, collectively titled Augmented Geology. I’ll share more info about the show when it’s in internet form!

Tiny Recommendations:
I’m doing a bunch of research on radio art as part of my fellowship this fall, and stumbling on some fun things. Among them: a live stream of terrestrial radio signal bouncing off meteor trails.
Semi-related, this live stream of deep sea exploration, and this essay about a person overcoming their fear of deep water in a homemade submarine, and this interactive website about the ocean.
This album from Ethiopian musician Tamrat Desta, and the upcoming solo from Patrick Shiroishi, which also has beautiful album art by LA-based ceramic artist Nancy Kwon.
Some of N’s students want to learn about Afrobeat, so we’ve been listening to a lot of Fela Kuti in the house.
Cooking-wise, we’re in the Autumn Period of Gratefulness for Turning on the Oven, a very special season in which we relish various baked and roasted delights. Here’s Yewande Komolafe’s Gochujang Chicken, and Yossy Arefi’s Cauliflower Chicken.
Relatedly, it’s apple season! I love this apple cake, recommended to me some years ago by my dear friend Deidre. It’s so good, now I make it every year.
On the plane I watched Minari, which was pretty good, and 17 again with Zac Efron and the guy who plays Chandler, which was vaguely atrocious (but yes, I watched the whole thing and no, this is not a recommendation).
Hope you’re thriving!
That’s all, for now,
Lia
*Why is it called Hot Plate Only?? Well, we made some of the recordings at a residency in northern Wisconsin, in a big old house that had a beautiful bathtub and seven bedrooms but no stove. We had some amazing grilled meals, waffle based meals, and of course, hot plate meals. The album name is an homage to that special week.
