More slow summer, a few shows, and a good attitude
Lia Kohl's August Newsletter (I'm aware that it's august sixteenth, yes)
Hi buddies,
This month I’m mixing a couple of records and doing sound design for a play, but otherwise spending lots of time with friends, on my bicycle, and walking around the neighborhood listening to bugs sing. September is busy, so I’m soaking in the last bits of summery air and open time. Cicadas are out in full force! It’s occasionally cool enough to roast a chicken! The lake is brisk but perfect at the end of a long bike ride — August is a beautiful moment.
And as my dear wise friend Zach says “when it stops being summer, it starts being bath season”. Now that’s what I call a good attitude.
a few upcoming shows:
I’m performing in and made the sound design for this wonderful puppet play by Claire Saxe:
August 18th, 19th, 20th: We Missed the Train and Had to Wait Steppenwolf Theater (this is nearly sold out so grab a ticket soon if you want one!)
and, early warning for a few East Coast shows in early September:
September 7th solo, Roulette, Brooklyn, NY
September 9th, Matt Mehlan and Sonnenzimmer’s Slow Dances, Roulette, Brooklyn, NY
September 10th, duo with Mikel Patrick Avery, Jerry’s, Philadelphia, PA
Tiny recommendations:
This month’s Music for _ , my “radio show” on Beloved Radio includes music by Nina Keith, Mabe Fratti, and The Books.
Get as many tacos as you can at La Chaparrita in Little Village.
This chicken is the aforementioned roast I recently did. Though a bit long form, it’s very easy and worked perfectly. In addition to herbs in the mayo rub (thyme, basil, parsley) I added some Aleppo pepper and half a preserved lemon, chopped very fine. Served it with these chickpeas, which really are worth a meal all by themselves. Don’t skimp on the olive oil!
Devening Projects recently showed a selection of Zander Raymond’s laminated collages. I love Zander’s work, and this show was no exception.
I’m excited to check out Jeff Kolar’s new installation at Chicago Athletic Association!
Really enjoyed The Funeral, directed by Juzo Itami (of Tampopo fame) and watching these videos of street food vendors making amazing dishes (I love that there’s no commentary!).
This clip, which I think about periodically when listening to music that I have made.
that’s all, for now.
